Methodology

Heavy Haul Rules is a reference for the people who plan over-dimensional freight: dispatchers, permit staff, brokers and shippers. Its only job is to state each state's oversize and overweight rules accurately and show where each rule comes from.

Sources

Every figure on a state page is taken from one of two kinds of source: the state's permit office (its official pages, FAQs and fee schedules) or the state's statutes and administrative code. Industry summaries, pilot car company pages and permit service blogs are not used as sources, because they are often out of date. Each state page lists its sources, and the load checker shows them next to every result.

What "verified" means

A state is published only after its legal limits, escort thresholds, travel restrictions, superload limits and fees have each been read from the sources above. The date on the page is the date that reading was done. States that have not been through this process are listed as in progress and are not included in the checker, so the checker never answers from unverified data.

Re-checking

Official source pages are monitored for changes. When a source changes, the state's rules are re-read, the page and checker are updated together, and the verified date is reset. Changes are recorded on the corrections page.

How to read the checker

The checker applies each state's thresholds to the dimensions you enter. It tells you whether a permit is required, which escort rules apply, which travel restrictions apply at that size, and whether the load crosses a superload threshold. It does not know your route, so it cannot account for posted bridges, construction, county roads or permit-specific conditions. Treat it as the first pass, and the permit as the final word.

Limits of this reference

This site is not a permit, not a permit service and not legal advice. State rules change, and permits add route-specific conditions. Confirm with the state permit office or your permit service before a move. If you find an error, report it; corrections are made promptly and logged.
